[chiang mai] day 2 (part II): mae sai, golden triangle & don sao, laos

after the long neck village, we stopped for lunch before continuing our journey to mae sai, the northern most point of Thailand and also the border between Thailand and Myanmar. we stopped here for about 45minutes. at first, we were planning on buying souvenirs in the market. unfortunately, the market here is like the petaling street market we had in Malaysia. there are not so many souvenirs around. but I did bought a keychain and some really sweet strawberries!

after mae sai, we finally made our move to the golden triangle. the journey from mae sai to the golden triangle was about 30 minutes. we arrived at the golden triangle around 3:40pm. john explained to us the history of the golden triangle. the name 'golden triangle' comes from the meeting of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. this place was once famous for its opium field. we took a boat ride from here to don sao, laos.
we need our passport in order to enter Laos (but no 'stamping' needed)

we could see both Myanmar and Laos from here (Thailand)

the boat is powered by cooking gas (i'm impressed)

the boat ride first took us to the point in the river where the three countries crossed. only then, it took us to don sao. the journey was about 20 minutes. we were given 30 minutes to wander at dan soa, again, it is advisable that you bought the souvenir here because it's cheap compared to the anusan night market. miss a and I wrote ourselves postcards to be send to Malaysia just for fun. but the cards don't arrived until now. i'm a little bit disappointed and still hoping it will still arrive one day.

we then took a boat ride back to the 'Thailand province' and headed back to our hotel in chiang mai. we stopped for dinner at this Islamic restaurant managed by the locals. it's actually easy to find halal food here in chiang rai/chiang mai. they are plenty of them around the anusan night market.
