[chiang mai] day 3: orchid farm, maetaeng elephant park, home industry tour & sunday night market

29 march 2015 (sunday)

today, our journey began around 8:30am. our first stop of the day is the orchid farm. we were greeted with an orchid pin. the orchids were planted in bottles with jelly. and only at a certain time, they were transferred to the pots. there's also a butterfly farm but it has only one kind of butterfly, but still it was beautiful. there are lots and various types of beautiful orchids to be seen.
isn't it beautiful?

our next stop was the most anticipated event of all, visit to the elephant park. there are a lot of elephant camps around. the one that we went to is called maetaeng. upon our arrival, we feed the elephants some bananas. the funny thing is we gave the banana one by one and even peeled them at first. the workers there, told us that we didn't have to peel or separate them. we could give them the whole bunch.

us, feeding the elephants
while we were busy feeding the elephants, john booked our elephant and ox ride for THB300/person. but before the ride, we went to see the elephant show. who knew elephants could play ball, dance and even paint. the elephants are well trained and they knew how to smile when seeing camera pointed at them. the elephant show was great and something really worth watching.

amazing! (not all elephant could draw, only the talented one.. same with us it seems..)
the drawings are sold to visitors for THB1000 each
okay, now is the time to ride elephants. miss a and I got to ride a lovesick female adolescent. her boyfriend was behind her and she kept turning/looking back for him. she even called him andwe could fell the vibration everytime she made a sound. she didn't want to move forward. the problem was only solved when the worker allowed her boyfriend walked first, in front of her. along the ride, you could by either bananas or sugar canes for THB20 as a treat for the elephants. once we finished our elephant ride, we experienced a ox  ride. done with the activities, we had lunch at the park  cafeteria which served halal food.

we then continue our journey to visit the local home industry. we visited the silk, leather, jewellery and umbrella industry. in each visit, we were shown how these products are made and manufactured. I even bought a ring at the jewellery shop (it has my birth stone, garnet). the jewellery sort of the Thailand Pandora call the simstars. at the umbrella shop, fiza bought an umbrella for one of our friend back in Malaysia. and once we are done with the home industry visit, we did some last minute shopping at the sunday night market, which again cheaper than the anusan night market. I stumbled upon a used bookstore and true to my nature of a bookworm, I bought one book on astrology and another one auf deutcsh. we went back to our hotel by a tuk tuk and once arrived we started packing.
